MS Points to be Phased Out?

A new report suggests that Microsoft are planning to ditch the Microsoft Points payment system used on Xbox Live.

Inside Mobile Apps claims that MS Points will be gone by the end of the year in favour of the use of real currency, based on the region of the customer’s account. The move would affect Windows Mobile apps and Zune Marketplace as well as Xbox Live and would bring Microsoft into line with its competitors, namely Apple’s App Store and the Playstation Network.

MS Points aren’t used universally on Microsoft’s services, with some real-money purchases available on each platform, but the company is yet to respond to this particular claim. I for one hope that it’s true – there may be some arguments in favour of the use of points, but to my mind it only creates confusion and puts an unnecessary obstacle in the way of customer purchases.

I saw this report earlier and thought it was a load of bull and still do. Although why I think it’s bull I’m not sure.

I can see pro’s and con’s for both payment methods. Being able to pay with money makes things a lot simpler – you know exactly how much you’re paying. But points are pretty easy to pay with. As long as they still solf vouchers in the shops I can’t see it being a major problem – I don’t really want to put my Credit Card details on my account.

The one thing that points to this story being true and is the basis behind it I think, is, as you’ve pointed out, more things are popping up that allow you to pay with sterling. Plus the arrival of PayPal makes me think that’s another step. Maybe I’ve just convinced myself this might actually happen!

I always thought it was a bit crap tbh. My old housemate had an xbox and he was wanting to play the same demos as me and the same games. But to purchase a game he would end up having to pay more than me because he would have to buy a set amount of points.
