2011′s UK Gaming Charts

Let’s get it out of the way: the bestsellers in the UK last year were Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3.

2011′s sales figures, published by UKIE and GfK Chart-Track, do tell a few other stories. Unfortunately none of these are to do with digital sales, which aren’t accounted for. UKIE hopes to launch digital charts this year, which will presumably be dominated by products on Steam if Valve decide to let on, but for now these figures will have to do.

Zumba Fitness dominated the charts during the summer, earning itself a fourth-place berth in the process ahead of Skyrim. Anyone doubting the selling power of non-mainstream titles should take note.  Another success story was made by L.A. Noire in eighth place, selling more copies in the shops than either Saints Row: The Third or Batman: Arkham City, which goes to show that a new IP with enough originality in its code can tough it out with the bug guns (although Rockstar’s marketing budget probably helped a little too).

Perhaps more surprising is what doesn’t appear. Portal 2 was squeezed out of the top ten, but the most interesting absence is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. That a Wii exclusive didn’t break the all-format top ten is unsurprising, but Link’s latest didn’t even sell enough to get into the top five on the Wii alone. Perhaps this is due to it’s late release, but the other games in the Wii chart – Zumba, Wii Sports Resort and Just Dance 2 and 3 – give a telling indication of the state of Nintendo’s console. Only Mario Kart Wii, in at number 4, comes close to being a mainstream title.

Here’s the total figures, overall and platform by platform. Aside from Black Ops 2 (surely) and FIFA 13, which games do you think will top the 2012 charts?
