24/7 UK gaming channel announced

Ever since Games Master left our screens way back in the past, gamers have been screaming for a new gaming programme to be released on mainstream TV at a reasonable hour.

Well today Ginx TV have perhaps answered these calls, with the announcement of a dedicated UK TV channel. The channel will launch by the end of November with the aim of the channel being on Sky and Virgin Media in both SD and HD.

Ginx TV CEO Michiel Bakker revealed the channel, and as one of the founders of MTV Networks Europe and chairman of Nickelodeon and Paramount Networks, Bakker may just be the right man for the job.

Bakker commented: “Launching our channel in the UK, the world’s second largest videogaming market, will propel Ginx to the big league. The next step for me is to accelerate the roll-out of fully localised channels in key markets around the globe.

“Video gaming is the only massively mainstream entertainment genre without a dedicated channel. My ambition here, is to do for gaming what MTV did for music. Video Gaming has broken through into mainstream entertainment, yet is thoroughly under-represented on TV. ”

We’re hoping Ginx TV works and wish the channel all of the best success – it certainly has ever chance with the players behind it. However history isn’t on their side. Gaming programmes have tried and failed since Games Master, and the last gaming channel that was launched in the UK became an adult channel. However, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this and hoping it does well.
