Feature: UFC Undisputed 2010 demo impressions

Istill own last year’s sports game of the year winner UFC 2009 Undisputed, its simplicity and raw feel made it so refreshing over EA’s Fight Night Round 4. But UFC is going franchise with annual updates to include winners of their own TV show ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, (currently in its eleventh season on Spike TV and Five US) and keep the game up to date in the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).

THQ released the demo last week to the public, and after some play testing and comparisons between the demo and last year’s instalment, it is plain to see UFC 2010 is showing continued signs of improvement.

Gone is that annoying awkward silence before a fight kicks in, with the game now keeping you fully immersed in the experience. Otherwise, nothing much has changed pre-fight besides the now more accurate gestures Bruce makes during the announcements, and the addition of in-ring security.

Once the fight starts, the biggest and instantly noticeable improvements are in the individual characters motions. By this I mean from the fighters you are able to pick, they move more like that person would around the ring, if ever you have seen one of their fights. You can also touch gloves at the start of a match, rather than seeing it as part of a random scene. It is a subtle change that is more personal to you the player, and allowing you to touch gloves may possibly affect something in your career mode in the full game.

Previously grappling was fine and worked well, and it handled more like a move from Street Fighter where you would rotate the stick and hold the takedown button in hopes of getting your opponent to the ground, this would result in further stick rotations if you were to go for the dominant mount position. In UFC 2010 it’s still the same but with a realistic twist. If you’re trying for a takedown and your opponent hits a soft board or the fence, the leverage you previously had will be negated as they can use the octagon to resist. It is still possible to achieve the takedown, but naturally much harder.

Clinches are improved ever so slightly, in the fact that the positioning of both fighters now appears like both are grappling. Whereas before one fighter would look like they are simply holding their face, while the fighter on the receiving end seemed as if they were being held down by some invisible person on their shoulders.

The biggest thing that hasn’t changed however is the visual face damage. You could, and still can, work on an opponent’s face till both eyes are shut and a maximum of four cuts are wide and bleeding profusely while your opponent is on the ground. Get them standing on their feet and a light wind will KO them.

The final mention is the inclusion of a tournament mode. You can set up fights by selecting the difficulty and decide how many participants to have, ranging from 4 – 16. A nice aspect of this is the ability to watch each match that is controlled by the CPU, if you care to of course. Keep playing or watching it to the end for a five round fight for the light heavyweight championship. Though dependant on skill and difficulty, it’s unlikely your fights will get into round three.

Anyone looking to purchase UFC Undisputed 2010 won’t be disappointed. The basic fight improvements I’ve seen, along with the mile long list of customisation and interactive career mode features, makes this a game to keep your eye on. UFC Undisputed 2010 hits stores Friday May 28th 2010.
