MW2 Surpasses $1 Billion

The unstoppable juggernaut that is Modern Warfare has just surpassed the 1 Billion Dollar milestone in worldwide sales.

In its first five days alone, the game sold an estimated $550 million worldwide, outpacing five-day worldwide theatrical box office gross figures for such films as Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Dark Night, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com.

“Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

My feeling is that figure may even double by the time the shelf life of MW2 has expired.

Now to see how greedy Activision get over Modern Warfare 3 / [the next IW installment] I wouldn't put it past them to rank up the price here in the UK to £60 for a default copy and £80 for a special edition, they may even over excite themselves enough to up the price in America by $5 because now they simply can get away with it. Any modern warfare installment by treyarch is pretty much gonna bomb unless it comes with Zombie Terrorist's but then that will most likely insight a we-can't-take-a-joke muslim protest.
